Many are familiar with the inviting gold and amber hues of Saltillo tile, which harmonize beautifully with almost any
design aesthetic. Organic terracotta, on the other hand, showcases a more consistent orange tone, enhanced by richer
honey shades. It maintains the cherished natural clay look while offering a uniquely distinctive color. Crafted solely from
water, fire, and earth (clay).

Organic terracotta tiles are delivered
unsealed and maintain a matte, textured
surface even after sealing.

TYPE We recommend Mapei Saltillo Grout for a more
traditional aesthetic. For more color options, we
recommend Mapei Ultracolor Plus grout.

JOINT Spacing for terracotta tile can vary from 1/4” to
3/4”; for tiles 6” and below, narrower joints generally
produce a more modern aesthetic, while larger joint
widths are suited for larger tile sizes creating a
traditional look

COLOR We recommend avoiding high-pigmented
grout colors. High-pigmented grout colors can stain the
surface of glazed and unglazed tiles.

Organic terracotta has a slightly consistent shade of
orange, with more saturated honey tones. Organic
terracotta showcases one of the lowest levels of color
variation, classified as V2, yet some variation may still
occur due to the unique qualities of handmade tile
production.

V2 SLIGHT VARIATION: Distinguishable
differences in texture and/or pattern
within similar colors.

It is normal and expected to find natural
indentations, bumps, scuffs, and
variations on the surface. Minor chips
may be present on the surface, edges, or
back of the tile. Irregular marks may be
present. These variations are common
characteristics of authentic, handmade
terracotta tile.

SEALING

Organic Terracotta tiles arrive to you unsealed. To protect their natural beauty and enhance their durability, it's important to seal them both before and after installation. You can customize the finish to your liking—whether you prefer a satin, matte, or gloss look. We recommend our Ultra-Low VOC Sealant, for a subtle satin finish and to ensure your tiles retain their charm while being well-protected

Explore our Organic Terracotta Installation Guide for
detailed installation information. We highly advise
hiring one of our recommended installers or someone
experienced with unsealed terracotta installations. It is
ESSENTIAL to seal Organic Terracotta tiles both before
and after installation.

Helpful Installation Tips:

  • Consider using crack prevention membranes,
waterproofing, flexible thin sets, and grout for your
    project.
  • Since every project is unique, additional materials
may be necessary beyond what our guides
    recommend.

We suggest consulting a tile professional to review
your specific product before starting the installation.

PATINA, VARIATION, AND WEAR

Organic Terracotta exhibits unique handmade
characteristics, such as slight chips, hairline cracks, and
natural distressing. This tile presents our most extensive
array of variations and will gradually develop a beautiful
patina over time.

Patina illustrates the transformation of the surface
when subjected to various elements. This natural
weathering process enhances authenticity and enriches
the tile's character, showcasing its history and the
passage of time. The final appearance is influenced by
treatment or sealing, along with the tile's natural wear.
Each installation will age in its own distinctive way.

STAIN OR WHITEWASH

It is feasible to darken Organic Terracotta tile by using a
mixture of linseed oil wood stain and an oil-based
sealant. The ratio of sealant to stain will vary based on
the desired opacity. We advise against applying stain
directly to unsealed terracotta, as this can lead to
excessive coloration and streaks. It's crucial to test your
stain mixture on a few tiles before full application to
ensure satisfaction with the outcome. This mixture can
be applied either by spraying or with a rag for a more
distressed appearance. After staining, we recommend
using a water-based top coat sealant; avoid using an
oil-based sealant for the top coat.

For a lighter tone with softer orange hues, you can also
consider whitewashing Organic Terracotta.

Terracotta

MAINTENANCE

Organic Terracotta does need maintenance as time
goes on. We suggest regularly cleaning your terracotta
with a non-acidic and ammonia-free cleaning solution.
When trying a new cleaner, it's wise to test it on a small,
inconspicuous area first.

Additionally, the top-coat sealant for Organic Terracotta
should be reapplied periodically. The frequency of
resealing will vary based on your desired patina and
how the terracotta is used. For exterior, high-exposure,
and high-traffic areas, more frequent resealing will be
necessary.
